NFPA 1989 Standard on Breathing Air Quality for Emergency Services Respiratory Protection

1.1.1 This standard shall specify the minimum requirements for breathing air quality for fire and emergency services organizations that use atmosphere-supplying respirators.
1.1.2 This standard shall specify the requirements for the breathing air quality component of the respiratory protection program required by NFPA 1500, Standard on Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program.
1.1.3 This standard shall not specify requirements for air quality for any other applications.
1.1.4 This standard shall not specify requirements for medical-grade oxygen.
1.1.5 This standard shall not be construed as addressing all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It shall be the responsibility of the persons and organizations that use this standard to establish safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use of this standard.
1.1.6 Nothing herein shall restrict any jurisdiction or breathing air provider from exceeding these minimum requirements.

NFPA 1989 Breathing Air Quality for Emergency Services Respiratory Protection specifies the requirements for the breathing air quality component of the respiratory protection program required by NFPA 1500 Fire Department Occupational Safety and Health Program. The critical guidance provided helps protect fire and emergency services personnel during fire fighting, rescue, hazardous materials, and special operations where respiratory hazards can or do exist.

· A revised and reformatted Chapter 5 Air Quality Requirements clarifies testing criteria and adds additional text regarding synthetic breathing air.
· A new Section 5.4 added special testing and procedures for suspected or actual contaminated breathing air.
· Section 5.6 Breathing Air Quality Requirements added a new requirement for nitrogen content in 5.6.8, and the associated testing method was added to Chapter 6 in Section 6.8.
· All of Chapter 5 Air Quality Requirements was updated for clarity and organization, and to refine the requirements.
· All of Chapter 6 Test Methods was revised for specificity modifications to the test methods.
· A new Chapter 7 Compressed Breathing Air Systems was added for systems that produce, purify, store, and supply breathing air for filling breathing air cylinders on supplied air respirators and SCBA. Requirements cover the installation, compressors, maintenance, and record keeping of these systems.
· Annex A material was updated and expanded to provide additional advisory information regarding breathing air quality issues.
