Bedding units posted a 12.8% gain in May and the dollar value of bedding shipments grew by 18.3% that month, the International Sleep Products Assn. reported.
ISPA's monthly Bedding Barometer report, which reflects the performance of a sample of leading bedding producers, said the average unit price jumped 4.9% in May, to $217.69.
For the first five months of the year, bedding units are up 9.7%, while the dollar value of bedding shipments is up 18.1%, ISPA said. The average unit price for the first five months is up 7.7%, to $214.50.
ISPA said the sample accounts for about 66% of total units and about 76% of the wholesale revenues of the full market, based on the industry's performance last year. It cautions that the results of the monthly reports "may not necessarily reflect the performance of the full mattress industry."
