BASF has broken ground on its 300,000 tonne/year toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) project at its Ludwigshafen petrochemicals production hub in Germany, the company said on Friday.

The chemicals major also confirmed that it expects the plant to come into production by the end of 2014. BASF had announced the project at Ludwigshafen in January.

BASF is investing about €1bn ($1.3bn) in the project. That sum includes investments in infrastructure and TDI precursor capacities, it said. The new plant will create about 200 jobs.

“The investment underlines our commitment to Ludwigshafen and will have positive effects for the region,” said BASF executive board member Margret Suckale, in German.
