LONDON (ICIS)--An explosion at a toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant construction site at BASF's Ludwigshafen production complex in Germany has injured one worker, BASF said on Tuesday.

BASF CEO Kurt Bock, speaking at the chemical giants annual results press conference, said that excavation was on-going at the plant construction site and World War II material had been found at the Ludwigshafen complex before.

Currently, there is no further information on the cause of the explosion.

We can only speculate on the reasons for this detonation, Bock said in German.

No harmful materials or gases had been released by the incident, he added.

BASF broke ground on the 300,000 tonne/year TDI project in November last year. The 1bn ($1.32bn) project was due on-stream by the end of 2014.
