Toray Industries, Inc., Tokyo, will increase its production capacity to produce nylon fibers for use in automotive airbag systems.
Toray said capacity for nylon 6,6 at its Ayutthaya Plant at Thai Toray Synthetics Co., Ltd. will increase by 7,000 m. tons/yr. beginning in January 2015. The expansion will bring Thai Toray's total capacity for nylon 6,6 to 23,000 m. tons annually. The company also produces nylon 6,6, in Thailand at its Okazaki Plant.
According to Toray, global demand for airbag fabrics is expected to grow at an annual rate of about 7% or more by 2020, along with the growth in four-wheeled vehicle production and rise in ratio of vehicles equipped with airbags in emerging markets led by Asian countries.
