The Lubrizol Corporation today announces the launch of a flame-retardant thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) product suitable for medical applications. Developed by Lubrizol LifeScience Polymers, this product is the first of its kind to feature high flame properties, low halogen content and a soft, matte or gloss finish.
In medical applications, a material’s Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) is a critical component. With an LOI of 30, this new TPU product demonstrates excellent flame-retardancy. It also exhibits low smoke and low toxicity, enhancing its suitability for an array of applications, including devices and cables.
A soft, rubber-like flexibility sets this new product apart from other flame-retardant materials. It is available with a matte or gloss finish and can be processed by conventional extrusion or injection molding, according to particular manufacturing specifications.
“This flame-retardant TPU is an exciting advancement that will be useful in many medical applications,” said Ralf Hüther, global business manager of Lubrizol LifeScience Polymers. “The material’s unique combination of properties is an example of Lubrizol’s dedication to making polymer science work for our customers, whatever their engineering needs.”
Citing Lubrizol’s more than 30 years of experience in the medical industry, general manager, Deb Langer said, “This new flame-retardant TPU product is further evidence that Lubrizol is not simply a supplier of innovative solutions in the medical field. We’re also a trusted partner who focuses on each customer’s needs in order to come up with the best solution.”
Lubrizol’s flame-retardant TPU will be featured at the 2013 Medical Design & Manufacturing East Conference in Philadelphia, Pa., June 18-20. Visit booth 3818 for more information about this new product.
