Magna International Inc. has launched production at two new plants in Mexico, one of them a 148,000-square-foot facility for the auto supplier's interiors group.

The Arteaga plant has thermoforming to produce headliners and injection molding for other interior parts, Magna officials said. The site also has auxiliary operations such as foam-in-place manufacturing, cut and sew operations, water jet trimming, bonding and assembly.

The bulk of the work will be for headliners and overhead consoles along with cargo management substrates, and heating and air conditioning vents. Parts will go to a variety of automakers including General Motors Co. assembly plants in both Mexico and the U.S.

At full production, the site will employ 345.

Magna, based in Aurora, Ontario, also marked the opening of another plant on Sept. 10 for its Cosma International group, which focuses on body and chassis systems. The two new plants bring Magna's footprint in Mexico up to 30 different facilities.
