Fire at PPR Wipag’s Dover plant – update

UK plastics recycler PPR Wipag has issued a statement clarifying details of the fire it suffered last week at its facility in Dover. According to Jonathan Weston, the firm’s general manager, the blaze was “reported on Sunday morning when the plant was closed for the weekend and therefore no one was on site.

“Forensic investigations have ruled out an electrical cause,” he added.

The fire started in a warehouse, used to store finished products, and spread to part of an adjoining production building, damaging a composites separation plant used to hand dashboards. “Thankfully our dedicated car bumper recycling line and our extrusion building, housing the Erema plastics recycling system, which was only commissioned towards the end of 2010, are totally unaffected,” explained Weston.

Despite the setback, the company is in robust health. Business in the first quarter of this financial year has been the best for several years and the company therefore believes the fire will not have any long term affects.

“PPR Wipag would like to say a very big thank you to the many good will messages received from friends and colleagues in the industry,” Weston said.
