BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, introduced its new co-extrudable Ultradur® for the reinforcement of thermally insulated PVC window profiles. Jointly developed with Dalian Shide Group, the new co-extrudable Ultradur® has a melting point closer to that of PVC, which enables a one-step optimized extrusion process of the window profiles and the replacement of steel so far used as reinforcement. Ultradur® (PBT: Polybuthylenetephthalate) is a high strength but lightweight reinforcement that provides the mechanical properties required to withstand strong winds and greatly reduces heat transfer through the window profile.

“Window profiles made with durable, lightweight and highly thermal insulating Ultradur® enables energy efficient construction and contributes to a reduction in energy required for heating and cooling of buildings. As such, it meets with increasingly stringent insulation requirements. Additionally, energy efficient construction directly translates to energy cost savings for consumers. This accordingly increases the value of buildings using such window profiles,” said Andy Postlethwaite, Senior Vice President, Performance Materials Asia Pacific, BASF.

The innovative and patent pending co-extrudable Ultradur® is the first Engineering Plastics innovation developed at BASF’s Innovation Campus in Shanghai.

“The energy saving window profile co-developed with Shide is an important milestone of innovation developed in close cooperation with the local customers in China,” said Dr. Zheng Daqing, Senior Vice President, Business and Market Development, Greater China, BASF. “With our advanced solutions for the construction industry, extensive local implementation plus a commitment to innovation for the local market, BASF is committed to promoting sustainable construction in China.”

“We’re glad that the partnership with BASF has generated encouraging results. Our patent pending one-step extrusion process enabled by our innovative mold design is more efficient and accordingly optimizes the production process of our window manufacturing customers,” said Mr Xu Bin, Chairman, Dalian Shide Group.”
