Massive Technologies coordinating sale of aero-grade carbon fiber

Massive Technologies LLC (Atlanta, Ga., USA), a CleanTech consulting firm, reports that it is coordinating the sale of 432,000 lb/195,952 kg of high-quality Toray Composites (America) aerospace-grade, prepreg carbon fiber. It is available at a discount from retail costs. Bids will be accepted for the inventory until Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at 5 p.m. EDT.

This inventory was originally acquired by The Boeing Co. (Seattle, Wash., USA) for its 787 Dreamliner airliners, however, manufacturing delays created an overstock opportunity, allowing Massive Technologies LLC to purchase the inventory. Massive Technologies and its partners acquired the material to build high-performance marine vessels for the United States Navy. The company was unable to secure a federal contract, and the inventory is now being liquidated at a substantial retail discount of $60/lb from the $145/lb rate originally paid by Boeing.

Massive Technologies says its carbon fiber consultants have analyzed the material and have concluded there is no product degradation even though the manufacture date on this inventory ranges from 1 to 3 years. All of the material is in its original packaging, unopened, and has been kept in secured storage at -14°F/-26°C since the date of acquisition. The 24-inch/610-mm, 12-inch/305-mm and 6-inch/152.5-mm wide rolls are all prepregged 35 percent resin-to-fiber, unidirectional weave and weigh as much as 150 lb/roll.

Massive Technologies says this carbon fiber can be used for the construction of unmanned-aircraft, experimental aircraft, wind-energy turbines, high-performance maritime vessels, specialty automotive components, communication systems, sporting equipment and other non-military-related uses. This material cannot be used in the United States for the construction of manned aircraft due to U.S. Federal Avaition Adminstration (FAA) regulations requiring all carbon fiber material for such use to be less than one-year from manufacturing.

Massive Technologies says that if this material is to be used for military applications by a foreign country, that country should be an ally of the United States and it is recommended that the buyer seek U.S. Department of Commerce authorization on the transaction.

Interested buyers may place bids for the carbon fiber until Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. EDT. Once the winning bidder is confirmed, they will have a two-week, exclusive escrow period for inspection, testing and validation of the carbon fiber inventory. Once purchased, the storage contract will be transferred into the name of the buyer and all transportation or shipping of the material to a new storage facility will be coordinated by the new owner. The inventory is located in Washington State, USA.
