Honeywell calls for a return of Boiler Scrappage Scheme

Heating control expert, Honeywell, is supporting the movement by the Heating & Hot Water Industry Council (HHIC) and The Association of Control Manufacturers (TACMA) to revive the Boiler Scrappage Scheme in England.

Honeywell is throwing its weight behind the work that the associations are doing to lobby MPs in England to reinstate the scheme, which will help safeguard thousands of jobs within the electrical and plumbing industry, create revenue for HM Treasury, reduce carbon emissions from homes and also help consumers keep their energy bills down.

In the current energy squeeze, with prices of gas and electricity rising by more than 19% and 10% respectively, bringing the Boiler Scrappage Scheme back to homeowners in England will go a long way to help save energy and money.

Including heating controls in the scheme will help to increase both carbon and cost savings even further, according to Andy Mansfield, marketing communications manager at Honeywell.

"This is a tried-and-tested method that is proven to work and deliver the boost to the wider economy in terms of the jobs and spending which we need, as well as energy savings and cost savings for homeowners.

"The last time the Boiler Scrappage Scheme was implemented in England, in only two months, 889 635 tonnes of CO2 were saved, along with £34m on energy bills and a total of 111 618 boilers were scrapped.

"Sixty-one per cent of those who claimed a voucher for the scheme stated that they would not have replaced their old boiler if it hadn't been for the scheme and 77% also fitted additional energy efficiency measures," he said.

If this scheme were to be re-introduced, every boiler which was replaced would save 1.5 tonnes of CO2, according to the HHIC.
