Introduction
Microsilica, also known as silica fume, it is a very fine pozzolanic material, composed of amorphous silica produced byelectric arc furnaces as a byproduct of the production of elemental silicon or ferro silicon alloys.Microsilica can be used in variety of cementitious products such as concrete/cement, grouts, and mortars as well as elastomer, polymer, refractory, ceramic and rubber applications etc.
Functions:
1)Very low chloride ion diffusion
2)Increased compressive strength
3)Reduced water permeability
4) Improved sulphate resistance
5)Improved abrasion resistance
6) Improved resistance to chemical attack
7)Improved stability in geothermal environments
8) Reduction in efflorescence

Production
Silicon metal and alloys are produced in electric furnaces. The raw materials are quartz, coal and woodchips. The smoke that results from furnace operation is collected and sold as silica fume
